Congratulations to Nikki Carter, EdD, GMLC Class of 2018 and GMLC Session I presenter, who recently completed her Doctor of Education (EdD), Educational Leadership at the University of Missouri! We asked Nikki a few questions about her journey and are sharing those below.

Keep rocking it, Dr. Carter!

What are your plans now that you’ve tackled this accomplishment?

I am deeply committed to my current role as the Director of Belonging and Community Impact at MU Health Care. My recent research on the impact of anti-DEI legislation has only strengthened my resolve to create a more equitable healthcare experience for all. By continuing in my current position, I can effectively apply my knowledge and passion to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients while supporting our clinicians in their efforts to provide compassionate, inclusive care. My goal is to drive lasting change within our healthcare system.

Anything you want to share about your doctoral journey?

I would say that I did not truly understand my “why” at the level I do now. I could easily share with you what I do and how it feels to join passion and purpose, but this journey has taken me deeper!

Advice to other alums thinking about doing this or in the middle of it?

Absolutely. If you’re thinking about it. DO IT! But make sure that you are honest with yourself about the sacrifices that will need to be made during this journey. There will be a lot of things that you have to let go of if you are to truly immerse yourself in this journey. Understand that you need a support system, and there is no substitution for family and friends who will love you through it.

If you’re in the middle of it…DO. NOT. GIVE. UP! You are too close to your victory. Allow yourself to be human and feel the feels. Take a minute to breath, but get back at it. Commit to doing a little bit daily. YOU’VE GOT THIS!

Anything else you want to share with the group?

Yes! Please allow me to reintroduce myself…my name is DOCTOR Nikki Carter, and I am overjoyed!
